Yangzhou State Guest House Conference Center & Wellness Center
荡舟廋西湖，泡个温泉，在趣园享受最顶级的淮扬美食，然后漫步长春路—–廋西湖片区在最近些年开始展现出独特的人文魅力，而这些都与扬州迎宾馆息息相关。本项目位于扬州迎宾馆片区最核心的区域，也是少有的新建大型公共建筑，它承载了扬州当代建筑对文化、历史、时代、环境、尺度等几大要素的回应。
Sailing on the Slender West Lake, bathing in the natural hot spring, enjoying the top notch Huai Yang gourmet food, with a long walk down the Changchun Road —— these are the unique culture charms you get to experience in the Slender West Lake area in recent years, and they are all tied in to Yangzhou State Guest House. This project is located in the utmost core area in Yangzhou State Guest House historicaldistrict. It’s a rare newly constructed large scale public architecture, which bears the weight of Yangzhou contemporary Architecture’s response towards the local culture, history, era of the time, environment, as well as its scale.
世界文化遗产旁、国宾馆，对这两个关键词的解读顺理成章的就是做成传统建筑摸样和周边的仿古建筑去呼应，四平八稳不犯错误。作为历史悠久的扬州迎宾馆的最后一个新建项目，如果因循守旧，必然是一个巨大的遗憾。建筑具有时代性是都设的一贯主张，在与整体协调的同时也要有建筑学上的创新，更要富有现代感。所幸得到了业主大力的支持，即使面对困难也没有妥协，最终实现了一个现代风格的“扬州建筑”。
Residing right next to a world cultural heritage, the Grand Canal, and being a state guest house are the two key labels for this building we were challenged to decipher and intercept as architects. One can easily give in to conventional thinking and have the urge to just make it look like a traditional Chinese style architecture or pseudo classic architecture surrounding it, playing it safe just to avoid mistakes. However, as the lastest construction for the Yangzhou State House Area historical district, it would be a huge regret if we were to just conform to the old beaten track. Making architecture a mark in the era of its time has always been advocated at DuShe. We believe that architectural innovations and modernization are supposed to be encouraged while making sure our design of the building is in accordance with the overall context. We are grateful to be able to gain profound supports from our client, who did not back off from our proposal even though it was a bumpy road making this modern style Yangzhou architecture a reality.

DuShe made integrated design from architecture to interior for this project. Our designers were hoping to form unconventional architectural and interior spaces in a traditional state guesthouse setting, while blending in with the current surrounding environment naturally.

现有环境已经绿树成荫，中间草坪围着一圈大树，所以，设计师提出消隐和共生两个概念。消隐就是从人视角度，特别是现有主入口，现有其他楼栋落客区的角度，看本项目的时候并不突显；共生就是尽可能减少对现有植被的影响。为此，我们提出下列几点策略，同时实地选取角度模拟和比较，最终较好地达到了预想的目标。
Next to the Slender WestLake, the site is already shaded by trees. Therefore, we proposed two concepts- Blanking and Symbiosis. Blanking means to make the presence of architecture less prominent at human eye level, especially from the angle of the existing main entrance and the drop-off areas from other buildings. Symbiosis is to minimize the impact on the existing plants distribution. To make this happen, we put up the following strategies: Simultaneously select the angles to make simulation and compare them on site. At the end of the design process, we were able to achieve the predicted goal quite successfully.

Strategy 2: Base on the programming layout, reduce the size of the ground building. Leave enough square footage for programming area with necessary functions, while cutting down the square footage for the non-essential programming with parts of the logistics area underground.

Strategy 3: Break down parts and introduce a courtyard space to further reduce the volume of the building. The courtyard would make the building and the environment more integrated.

借鉴园林中借景，对景，框景等方式强化室内与室外的共享。无论是会议中心的宴会厅、大会议室、会见厅还是康体中心的泳池和门厅，都可以感受到迎宾馆优美的自然环境。哪怕身处地下车库，甫一落客，走进门厅依然可以感受到有阳光雨露的小景庭院。
We combined the landscape design techniques, such as borrowed scenery, opposite scenery, enframed scenery,etc. to intensify the integration of both architectural and interior. No matter you are in the ballroom of the convention center, the large conference room, the meeting room, or in the pool or foyer of the wellness center, you can experience the beautiful natural scenery surrounding the hotel. Even if you just got dropped off in the underground garage, you still get to experience the scenery courtyard showered with sunshine and rain drops, as soon as you walked in the foyer.

建筑屋面设计：保持了与周边建筑相似的坡屋顶的造型，歇山顶被树木掩映若隐若现。屋面选择了现代的材料和构造方式，对传统造型进行提炼，檐口平直简洁，屋脊丰富有层次，这些是混凝土或者瓦材等传统材料及构造无法实现的。屋面采用陶制平瓦，色泽上不似琉璃瓦那般绚丽，弱化了屋顶的体量和色彩，消隐在整体环境中。屋脊是整个项目的亮点，用金属抽象的反映传统建筑的精髓。
Roof Design: A sloped roof form similar to the ones on the surrounding buildings was maintained. The hilltops were covered with woods and you can have a glimpse through them from where you are standing. As for roofing surface, we chose to use modern materials and construction methods to refine the traditional building form. The roofing eaves are straight and clean, with the roofing ridge is enriched and layered. This is an effect that can not be achieved with concrete or tile. The roofing surface is made of ceramic flat tiles. We believe the glass tiles were a better choice to attenuate the roof volume and color scheme since it makes it easier for the roof to blend in with the overall environment, even though it might not come up as glamourous as glazed tiles. The roofing ridge design is the highlight of the entire project, for which we used metal to reflect the essence of traditional Chinese architecture in an abstract way.

角柱与花窗的设计：增加角柱调节立面比例，通过细节设计强化了角柱存在感，使得立面上柱与墙的关系更加脱离，与传统建筑中木结构中柱墙关系相契合。传统建筑尤其在园林中，花窗元素多样而常见，是室内外沟通的传统方式，在比较花窗的内外位置后，选择将花格外置，同时采用了前后双层叠合的构造方式，一方面增加花窗层次，一方面兼顾模块化加工和成本控制。
The Design for the Corner Post and the Floral Window: We added corner posts to adjust the scale of the façade, and to strengthen the presence of the corner post by designing the detailing on it, this way we could made the relationship between the column and the wall look more detached on the facade. The relationship between the column and the wall were therefore more in line with the traditional Chinese-style wood structure building. In traditional Chinese gardens, floral window is usually a way to communicate between indoor and outdoor spaces. After comparing the positioning of floral windows on both the indoor and outdoor, we chose to place the floral grid on the outdoor side with a double-layered superimposition to increase the layers and complexity of the floral window, whilest keeping the modulating process and budgeting under control.

主入口吊顶设计：入口门廊的吊顶设计取意于传统建筑的“藻井”。将方形的凹龛与灯光组合，解决了大面积吊顶平整性问题同时达到见光不见灯的效果。
Main Entrance Ceiling Design: The ceiling design of the entrance porch is based on the “algae well” from traditional Chinese architecture. And we combined a concaved square niche with lighting to solve the problem on how to keep large ceiling flat and how to bring in lights without seeing the luminaires.

沿湖长廊的设计：游廊在传统园林中是重要的空间元素，在扬州的个园何园，游廊处理了内外空间过度以及重要的交通空间。会议中心宴会厅朝向中央景观的一侧正是这样一个机会。常规的宴会厅有前厅（Pre-function），由于用地限制，这里的前厅和游廊合二为一，反而形成了一个内外交融的空间。灯光设计中将柱廊的反射充分考虑，从而在平整的吊顶上形成这面吊顶的光斑。
Sightseeing Veranda alongside the Lake:A veranda is a crucial and special element in traditional Chinese garden design. Similar to the famous He-Garden and Ge-Garden in Yangzhou, our veranda took care of the circulation among the indoor, outdoor and important traffic spaces. One side of the convention center ballroom was facing the central landscape. This was the perfect space for us to take a chance in making a veranda. A regular ballroom tends to have a pre-function hall, however, due to the limitation on land using, we decided to merge the pre-function hall with the ballroom to create a space that can blend the inside out. In lighting design, the reflection of the veranda columns were carefully considered to create light spots on the flat ceiling.

Light and Shadow Effect of the Façade: In traditional Chinese architecture, the shadow of trees and the floral window could create an appealing shadow effect. However, our buildings have large plain walls due to programming requirements. How to eliminate these boring walls? The answer we were looking for still lies within the traditional Chinese architecture style we drew inspiration from —— we could simply use light and shadow to create the unexpected. This idea actually ended up being a pleasant surprise and brought us more than what we were expecting.

康体中心沿长春路的立面较为封闭而且尺度较大。用竖向三角凹槽的造型均质划分康体中心主墙面，进一步化解尺度和增加细节。矮的墙面则是采用同种石材下，三种不同的表面处理手法[亚光面、水洗面、剁斧面]，营造出不同的光影质感；以横向错拼的手法，使得这面‘景墙’更加自然，在近人尺度下也更加具有触摸感。
The wellness center has a façade facing Chang Chun Road. It’s enclosed and is on a very large scale. In order to dissolve the sense of this large scale and to add more details, vertical triangular grooves were used to equally divide up the main façade of the wellness center. The shorter walls are using the same type of stone material with three different surface processing method: matte, washed, and axe-cut. These processing method made variations for the stone texture and how the light and shadow were casted on them. The horizontal mismatching tiling method made the “scenery wall” looked more natural and has a tangible sense of texture in a close-up human level scale.

室内空间的传统与突破
The Tradition and Breakthrough of the Interior
谈及国宾馆，人们印象中的风格总是一致的。我们在室内设计时希望突破这一传统观念，营造与建筑本身相匹配、更好利用环境、更加现代的室内空间。会议中心以稳重、传统、精致为基调，保证空间格局的传统，强调对称性。材料上选择深色木饰面搭配精细的铜色金属线条为墙面主色调，公区木饰面选择方影麦格利（木纹名称）与建筑的窗和花格呼应，营造室内墙面的细节和光影变化，宴会厅选择山纹黑胡桃（木纹名称）并考虑到整体亮度上弱化墙面，强化灯光和自然光的效果。康体中心以轻松、自然、典雅为基调，空间上多用弧线引导和转折的方式，营造曲径通幽的体验。材料选择以较浅的柚木和桦木饰面为公区墙面主色调，泳池区域以仿古面和自然面石材为主材，结合透过大面玻璃幕墙的阳光，营造自然的感受。
When it comes to the StateGuesthouse, people always have the same impression. We wish to break through the traditional limitation in order to match up with the building itself when it comes to its interior design, with a better use of the surrounding environment to create a more modern indoor space. The conference center has a stable, traditional and refined base tone, which ensured the traditional space pattern with an emphasis on symmetry. As for the material choice, we decided on using a dark wooden finish with fine copper metal lining for the main color of thewall. For the public area, a wood finish, square shadow Makore was chosen to callback to the building’s windows and floral grid, this way we were able to create intricate indoor wall details and to reflect the movements of light and shadow. For the banquet hall, we chose Black Walnut to dim down the overall brightness of the wall, while enhancing the natural and artificial lighting effects at once. As for the Wellness center,we believe it’s supposed to have a relaxed, natural, yet elegant tone. The spacial design used lots of arc as a way of guiding and turning in order to create an experience where the winding path leads you up to a secluded quiet place. For the public area material selection, we had an inclination to use a lighter tone teak and birch wood to create the main wood tone. Last but not least, for the pool area, we chose antique and natural stone surfaces as our main material. Combining with the sunlight coming through the large glass curtain, a natural feeling was created to be embraced by the guests.

会议门厅：入口墙面延续室外石材，自然过渡到室内，简洁的矩形藻井丰富了空间层次。入口对景为古运河风光的缩影，转到宴会厅一侧，岩板对称拼花对景强调了空间的端庄感。门厅以铜色金属花格限定多重空间，花格如园林中“漏窗”一般，增加了空间层次感。
Conference Hall Foyer: We continued to use the stone material from the exterior wall for the interior wall by the entrance to naturally transform the space from the exterior to the interior. The simple rectangular algal well pattern enriched the spacial layers. Upon entering, you would experience the entrance with the opposite scenery, a microcosm of the ancient canal. Turning to the side of the banquet hall, the sense of solemnness of the space is filled by the symmetrical marble patterned opposite scenery. The foyer has multiple layers of spaces with copper-colored metal floral grids, which resembles the “leaking window” in traditional Chinese garden design and intenfies the sense of spatial hierarchy.

大会议室：以园林作为背景，通过漏窗渗透进室内，地毯以运河之水的涟漪为形层层散开。吊顶以四坡起拱，采用“轩式天花”这种江南地区的设计，是对建筑屋面的回应，亦是瘦西湖的园林环境的融合——通过划分避免过大的空间对应的尺度失调。天花的折纸灯取形自宫灯——以细木为框架，镶以纱绢，端庄典雅。
Large Conference Room: The garden was used as the backdrop to be seen through the “leading window,”and a canal wave patterned carpet was designed to flow through the space. Ceiling arches with four slopes, the “Xuan-style ceiling” design type of the Jiang Nan area, responded to roofing design on the exterior. It’s also a fusion with the traditional Chinese Slender West Lake garden environment: by dividing one big room into a series of small spaces, a mismatched scale were avoided. The ceiling origami lights were inspired by palace lanterns from ancient Chinese dynasties —— framed by fine wood and affixed with yarn to bring out a decorous and classy look.

康体中心
康体中心的门厅更像园林中的“花厅”，入口即对着内庭。前台采用了圆弧形的设计，虽然是石材，但却有卵石的温润感。弧形的木饰具有导向性，从前台往里经过内院通过长廊到达了主要功能空间，休息室墙面的木饰面延续到泳池区域门口，有水空间一侧则用了石材，形成了柔和刚的对比。最后映入眼帘的是50米泳池区，落地玻璃朝中心景观面最大化开放，泳池获得良好的视野同时玻璃面模糊了界面消解了建筑体量感。
The foyer of the wellness center resembles a “floral hall” in a traditional Chinese garden,with the entrance facing straight towards the inner courtyard. The front desk has an arc-shaped design. Pebble-like stones were used to give it a warm and gentle touch. The arc-shaped wood ornaments would guide guests from the front desk, passing through the inner courtyard and arriving at the main functional spaces after going through the promenade. The wood ornamented finish on the lounge wall were continued to be applied up until the entrance of the pool area. On the side with water, a rough stone material was chosen to create a contrast between gentle and tough. Finally, here comes the 50-meter-long swimming pool, with the glass curtain wall showing the center landscape. You get a maximized best view with a dissolved building mass since the interface between indoor and outdoor blurred by the glass curtain.
